今日約翰．湯姆生的攝影作品都保存在英國Wellcome Library，目前全數數位化並開放免費下載；這篇文章作者進一步利用Google地球中的照片疊加功能，將約翰．湯姆生1871年所拍攝的打狗港舊照片「貼」到現在的地景上，可以藉以比對出當時稅關、洋行的所在以及哨船頭聚落的樣貌，以及今昔環境的變遷。
